Bank job interview questions to practise

Bank interviews usually combine personal questions with banking awareness and situations you might face at a branch. Panels look for clear communication, honest motivation and a basic understanding of how banks serve people.

For awareness questions, explain concepts in simple words and check the latest figures from official sources shortly before your interview — rates and schemes change.

  1. Introduce yourself.

What they are looking for: Communication and how you present your background.

How to approach it: Education, any work experience, your home town, and why you are drawn to banking — in about a minute.

  2. Why do you want to join a bank after studying engineering?

What they are looking for: Motivation, if your background is different.

How to approach it: Give a real reason — public service, finance interest, stability — and connect a skill from your degree to banking work.

  3. What is the repo rate, and why does it matter?

What they are looking for: Basic banking awareness.

How to approach it: Explain it simply as the rate at which the central bank lends to banks, and how changes affect loan and deposit rates. Check the current figure before your interview.

  4. What is financial inclusion, and how do banks support it?

What they are looking for: Awareness of the bank’s role in society.

How to approach it: Define it as access to basic financial services for everyone, and mention examples such as no-frills accounts and digital payments.

  5. How would you handle a customer complaint at a busy branch?

What they are looking for: Customer handling under pressure.

How to approach it: Listen, apologise for the trouble, solve what you can on the spot, and escalate the rest with a clear timeline.

  6. Are you willing to work in a rural branch?

What they are looking for: Flexibility.

How to approach it: Answer honestly, and mention what you could contribute and learn in a rural posting.

  7. Tell me about a recent development in banking or digital payments.

What they are looking for: Keeping up to date.

How to approach it: Pick one development you understand, explain it in two sentences, and say how it affects customers.

  8. Tell me about your home district.

What they are looking for: A common way to see how you observe and explain.

How to approach it: Its main occupations and economy, one opportunity and one challenge, and how banking could help there.

  9. What are your strengths that suit a banking career?

What they are looking for: Self-awareness and fit.

How to approach it: Two strengths — accuracy, patience, communication — each with a short example.
